Introduction to Hardware Networking Level 01

Overview:

  • Build a strong foundation in networking β€” from fundamentals, devices, IP addressing, switching, and routing to wireless, security, and servers.
  • Duration: 2 Months

Topics Covered:

  • Fundamentals of Networking (LAN, WAN, MAN, WLAN, Topologies, OSI & TCP/IP Models)
  • Network Devices (Hub, Switch, Router, NIC, Modem, Access Point, Firewalls)
  • IP Addressing & Subnetting (IPv4/IPv6, Classes, Public/Private, CIDR, Subnetting)
  • Switching Concepts (Layer 2 Switching, VLANs, STP, Hub vs Switch)
  • Routing Concepts (Static, Dynamic, RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, Default Gateway)
  • Wireless Networking (Wi-Fi Standards, Security Protocols, Hotspot & AP setup)
  • Network Security Basics (Firewalls, VPNs, Port Numbers, DoS, MITM, Phishing)
  • Servers & Services (DHCP, DNS, FTP, Web & Mail Servers)

Syllabus

Module 1: Fundamentals of Networking
  • What is a network?
  • Types of networks: LAN, WAN, MAN, WLAN
  • Topologies: Bus, Star, Ring, Mesh, Hybrid
  • OSI Model & TCP/IP Model basics

LAB 1
  • Connect 2 PCs with a crossover cable
  • Use ping command to test connectivity
  • Identify devices (hub, switch, router) in real lab or virtual simulation (Cisco Packet Tracer / GNS3)

Module 2: Network Devices
  • Hub, Switch, Router, Bridge, Repeater, Access Point
  • Modem & NIC (Network Interface Card)
  • Firewalls (basic introduction at device level)

LAB 2
  • Observe physical devices in a lab / simulation
  • Identify ports and LEDs
  • Connect router–switch–PC in Packet Tracer

Module 3: IP Addressing & Subnetting
  • IPv4 & IPv6 basics
  • Classes of IP addresses
  • Public vs Private IPs
  • Subnetting & Supernetting
  • CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing)

LAB 3
  • Assign IPs manually to PCs and test with ping
  • Use ipconfig (Windows) / ifconfig (Linux)
  • Practice subnetting problems

Module 4: Switching Concepts
  • Hub vs Switch (difference)
  • Layer 2 Switching concepts
  • VLANs (Virtual LANs)
  • STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) basics

LAB 4
  • Create VLANs in Cisco Packet Tracer
  • Configure switch ports

Module 5: Routing Concepts
  • Static Routing vs Dynamic Routing
  • Routing Protocols: RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP (intro)
  • Default Gateway

LAB 5
  • Configure static routing between 2 routers in Packet Tracer
  • Enable RIP/OSPF in Packet Tracer or GNS3

Module 6: Wireless Networking
  • Wi-Fi Standards (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax)
  • Wireless Security (WEP, WPA, WPA2, WPA3)
  • Hotspot & Access Point setup

LAB 6
  • Configure a Wi-Fi router at home
  • Set up SSID & password
  • Test with multiple devices

Module 7: Network Security Basics
  • Firewalls & IDS/IPS basics
  • VPN concepts
  • Port numbers & services
  • Common attacks: DoS, MITM, Phishing

LAB 7
  • Configure Windows/Linux firewall rules
  • Use Wireshark to capture & analyze packets

Module 8: Server & Services
  • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
  • DNS (Domain Name System)
  • File Sharing (SMB, FTP, NFS)
  • Web & Mail Servers basics

LAB 8
  • Set up DHCP server in Packet Tracer
  • Create a local FTP server (FileZilla / Python)
  • Configure DNS on a local network

Learning Outcome

  • Master the essentials of computer networking with practical labs β€” configure IPs, create VLANs, set up routing & Wi-Fi, explore servers & security with tools like Packet Tracer and GNS3.
